Caste System: Lavadieu operates on a strict caste system, and members of a caste are prohibited to marry outside of their caste. The only ways to become a member of another caste are to be pressed into slavery, freed from slavery, or adopted by a member of another caste.
Patrician – The aristocratic caste. Patricians are expected to take up the study of arcane magic, and by virtue of their place in society, they own most of the land in Lavadieu. One cannot buy their way into the caste, though if a patrician adopts a member of another caste, that person becomes a patrician. Patricians are endowed with most of the political power in Lavadieu, as well as the ability to freely perform mercantile business in Lavadieu. Only magic using patricians may become senators. The Patricians are represented by the Senate of Lavadieu, headed by the Serene Doge of Lavadieu, and the secretive White Cloaks.
Pontiff – Beneath the patricial caste are the pontiffs. Pontiffs are the religious authority in Lavadieu, authorized to perform rituals. The highest ranking pontiff of each temple is given a yearly stipend, which may be used to live on and to perform religious observances. Pontiffs are represented by the College of Pontiffs, lead by a pontiff elected by the college to serve as High Pontiff. He or she is the highest religious authority in Lavadieu, serves for life, and represents the interests of the College of Pontiffs in the Senate.
Plebeian – Commoners are the caste of workers, artisans, and farmers throughout the republic. Commoners may, with the permission of the senate, establish Guilds which represent their individual trades (blacksmith, shoemaker, etc). Commoners are represented by the Public Council, lead by the Chief of the People. Plebeians are prohibited study or practice magic of any kind, and doing so is a capital offense.
Slave – Slaves are typically purchased abroad, born into the caste, or are convicts who were pressed into slavery. They have bare minimum rights, but are essentially treated as property. Their owner may free them with permission from the Senate. Freed Slaves adopt the caste of Plebeian, unless adopted by a Pontiff or Patrician
